In Field Electrochemical Detecting of Carbon Steel and Low Alloy Steel Samples at a marine corrosion test station |

Abstract The electrode system for real-time electrochemical measurement of immersed samples were designed and applied at a marine corrosion test station in Zhoushan of China. Polarization resistance measurement and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were used to monitor four carbon steel and low alloy steel coupons during the different period of exposure in seawater. The measuring results reflected the corrosion performance of the samples in different period and the influence of seawater conditions. The polarization resistance changed because the rust was deposited on the samples surface and the seawater temperature changing. EIS proves to be qualified in measuring the metal samples exposed in seawater, which also reflects the corrosion mechanism of the samples during exposure. The electrochemical measuring results were approximately consistent with the lost weight data exposed in seawater for one year.
