Abstract The electrochemical behavior of pure zinc in concentrated KOH solution was studied using electrochemical techniques. It was found that the dissolution of zinc was accelerated and the evolution of hydrogen was inhibited in the anodic and cathodic Tafel region respectively with increasing concentration of OH-. Three relaxation processes were observed on EIS at the anodic polarization potentials. The corrosion mechanism of zinc in the alkaline solutions was advanced according to these experimental facts. The relation between the corrosion rate of zinc and the concentration of OH- was obtained by low polarization region curve-fitting technique.
