Abstract The solubilities of α-Fe_2O_3, Fe_3O_4 and Cr_2O_3 in fused Na_2SO_4 have been measured as a function of Na_2SO_4 melt basicity at 1200K and at 1 arm and lower oxygen pressures. Results are in agreement with the thermodynamic expectations. From the solubility measurements, the basic and acidic solutes of the oxides in molten Na_2SO_4 have been derived and their activity coefficients have also been determined. The solubility studies may be of assistance in understanding fluxing and electrochemical mechanisms of hot corrosion.
