Abstract  This paper reviews the time line of using microarc oxidation (MAO) methods and its spark discharge mechanism. The emphasis is based on the corrosion prevention for magnesium alloys using the MAO method in the past two decades. Various aspects of MAO coating of magnesium alloys and recent progress are summarized in detail, such as power types, operating modes, electrical parameters, electrolyte solutions, post- and pre-treatments. And the problems and suggestion of MAO technology on magnesium alloys were presented in the end.
