Abstract The 40Cr steel has been laser surface alloyed with Ni60B powder.The alloyed layer is then characterized by SEM observation, XRD analysis and microhardeness tester.While its resistance to wear and corrosion is also examined.The results show that the alloyed layer consisted of a melted zone,a transition zone and a heat affected zone.The microstructure of melted zone is cellulardendtrite crystallites,the heat affected zone extremely small hidden martensite.Phases Cr23C6 and Cr3C2 are observaed.the microhardness of the alloyed layer can reach up to Hv 8.6 GPa,which is three times higher than that of the substrate.The wear and corrosion resistance of the alloyed layer is higher than that of the substrate as wall.
